Hearing Care Where You Are: Our Mobile Audiology Services at Home and in Aged Care

Let’s be honest, getting across Perth in peak-hour traffic is enough to make anyone want to stay under the covers. Or maybe you’re trying to coordinate a trip for an elderly parent who finds a car journey more exhausting than a marathon. I’ve seen it a thousand times: patients putting off their hearing health simply because the "getting there" part is just too hard.

At Pristine Hearing, I decided a long time ago that if my patients couldn't come to me, I’d take the clinic to them. Whether you are living in a family home in Subiaco, a busy office in the Perth CBD, or an aged care facility in Launceston, we bring world-class audiology right to your doorstep.

In this post, I’m going to walk you through exactly how our mobile audiology services work, why we’re the preferred audiologists in Perth for home visits, and how we support residents in major aged care groups like Aegis, Juniper, and Hall & Prior.

Why Mobile Audiology is a Game Changer

You might be wondering, "Can you really do a proper hearing test in my living room?" The answer is a resounding yes.

In the old days, you needed a massive soundproof booth to get accurate results. While we still love our booths in the clinic, modern technology has shrunk that power down into high-tech, portable equipment. I use clinical-grade portable audiometers (devices used to measure hearing sensitivity) and specialized headphones that provide excellent noise attenuation (the reduction of background sound).

The benefits of staying put include:

  1. Reduced Stress: For many of my elderly patients or children with sensory needs, a clinical environment can be intimidating. Being in their own lounge room makes the whole process a breeze.
  2. Acoustic Realism: I can hear exactly what you hear in your daily life. If your fridge hums or your TV is positioned in a certain way, we can adjust your hearing aids in Perth to suit your actual environment.
  3. Convenience for Careers: If you're a busy professional or a caregiver, you don't have to factor in two hours of travel and waiting room time. Bob’s your uncle, we show up, do the work, and you’re back to your day.

Bringing Specialized Care to Aged Care Facilities

A significant portion of my week is spent visiting some of the most respected aged care providers in Western Australia and Tasmania. We regularly visit residents at Aegis, Juniper, and Hall & Prior facilities.

When a resident has a hearing loss that goes untreated, they often pull back from social activities. They stop going to the communal dining room or stop participating in group games because they simply can't follow the conversation. It’s heartbreaking, but it is also completely fixable.

How We Support Residents and Staff

  • Regular On-Site Clinics: We don’t just pop in once a year. We build relationships with the facility managers and nursing staff to ensure regular check-ups.
  • Hearing Aid Maintenance: Hearing aids are tiny, and in an aged care setting, they can easily get clogged with wax or misplaced. I provide on-site cleaning, battery replacements, and troubleshooting.
  • Staff Education: I often spend time showing the wonderful staff at Juniper or Aegis how to properly insert a resident's hearing aid or how to change a wax guard (the small filter that protects the electronics).
  • Funding Guidance: Navigating the Hearing Services Program (HSP) can be a nightmare. I help families understand what they are entitled to so their loved ones get the best possible care without unnecessary costs.

Case Study: Mrs. Margaret at an Aegis Facility
Margaret was struggling to hear her grandchildren during their weekly visits. She found it too difficult to leave the facility for an appointment. I visited her in her room, performed a full assessment, and fitted her with a pair of discreet hearing aids. Because I was there in her actual living space, I could program the aids specifically to help her hear the TV clearly without it being at a volume that disturbed her neighbours. Now, she’s back at the bingo table and hasn't missed a beat!

The Mobile Ear Wax Specialist: No More Blocked Ears

One of our most requested mobile services is professional ear wax removal. If you’ve ever had a "blocked" feeling in your ear, you know how frustrating it is.

I am a mobile ear wax specialist using the latest microsuction technology. Microsuction is the "gold standard" of wax removal. Unlike old-fashioned "syringing" which uses high-pressure water (and can be messy and uncomfortable), microsuction is essentially a tiny vacuum cleaner for the ear. It’s safe, quick, and remarkably effective.

Why choose our mobile wax service?

  • Safety First: I use high-magnification loupes (specialized glasses) to see exactly what I’m doing inside your ear canal.
  • No Mess: Because we don't use water, there’s no dripping or wet pillows.
  • Instant Relief: Most patients feel an immediate improvement in their hearing and a reduction in that "clogged" feeling.

If you are suffering from a sudden drop in hearing, book a mobile ear wax removal appointment immediately. Do not use cotton buds, you’ll only push the wax deeper!

Hearing Care for Busy Professionals and Families

It’s not just seniors who benefit from our mobile services. I see plenty of "younger" adults and children too!

Office Visits

If you’re a professional in Perth and your hearing is making meetings a struggle, I can come to your office. We can do a discreet assessment and discuss how modern hearing aids in Perth can connect directly to your smartphone and laptop for crystal-clear Zoom calls.

Kids and CAPD Assessments

We also see children for various assessments, including Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD). For a child who is already struggling at school, the comfort of their own home can make the testing process much more accurate and less "scary." Whether you are in Perth or need an assessment in Launceston or Devonport, we are here to help.

Our Regular Visits to Tasmania: Launceston & Devonport

While our heart is in Perth, we have a very strong connection to the Apple Isle. We make regular trips to Launceston and Devonport to provide mobile audiology services.

Accessing specialist audiology in regional Tasmania can sometimes be a challenge. That’s why we bring our full suite of services, from hearing tests to mobile ear wax specialist appointments, to the North and Northwest of Tassie. If you have family in Launceston who need a home visit, get in touch and we can let you know when our next "Tasmania Tour" is scheduled.

What to Expect During Your Home Visit

If you’ve never had a mobile health appointment before, you might be unsure how to prepare. Here is my step-by-step guide to a successful home audiology visit:

  1. Clear a Small Space: All I need is a quiet corner with a small table and two chairs.
  2. Turn off Background Noise: For the most accurate results, we’ll ask you to turn off the TV, the dishwasher, and any loud fans for about 30 minutes.
  3. The Otoscopy: I’ll start by looking into your ears with an otoscope to check for wax or any physical issues.
  4. The Hearing Test: You’ll wear a pair of specialized headphones and press a button whenever you hear a sound (even the very faint ones!).
  5. The Results: We’ll sit down and go through your audiogram (the graph of your hearing) immediately. No waiting for letters in the mail!
  6. Action Plan: If you need hearing aids, we can discuss the latest technology and even do a trial. If it’s just wax, we’ll clear it right then and there.

Make sure to have any previous hearing test results or GP referral letters ready, though you don't always need a referral to see us! Check out our GP referrals page for more info.

Practical Takeaways for Better Hearing

  • Don't wait for "the right time": Hearing loss is progressive. The sooner you address it, the easier it is for your brain to adapt to hearing aids.
  • In-home is just as accurate: With our clinical-grade portable gear, you aren't sacrificing quality for convenience.
  • Check your funding: Many of our mobile services are covered or subsidized for pensioners and veterans. See our funding page.
  • Aged care residents have rights: Residents in facilities like Hall & Prior or Juniper deserve high-quality hearing care. Families can request us to visit specifically.
